What to expect in Design School
Design schools cater for a whole array of different careers, including interior design, graphic design, fashion design and digital design. Each of these careers have different requirements, but there are a number of similarities to these courses, not least that they all require people with real artistic talent, and the ability to translate this into practical designs for use in the real world.
Most courses will have an element of training of the student's artistic talent, including design principles and drawing. There will be some technical subjects, in the case of fashion design these will concern textiles, interior design will concentrate on furnishing, fabrics and construction issues, and in digital design the technical part will concern computing and graphics.
Many design courses include an element of client management, as most designers will deal with both clients and fellow workers. As many people in the design industry are self-employed, there may also be some business administration element to the course.
Many design courses include a practical element with some time spent in the industry that the student is studying to enter. This not only gives good experience of the work environment, it also allows the student to strengthen contacts within the industry - invaluable when looking for the next career step.
Design schools allow students to develop design portfolios, a most important step in the job prospecting process. Often schools will hold exhibitions of students work during their course, inviting prospective employers to view the work in order to be able to choose students they wish to interview. School also provides a chance to create contacts in the industry that can last a lifetime - an invaluable asset at the beginning of your career.
